DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE


The department of commerce with computer applications was established in the year 2012. The Department of Commerce has flourished right from its inception in the college. The Department of Commerce, at present offers B.Com. (Computer Applications). as per the guidelines and syllabus set by the Yogi Vemana University, Kadapa. The Commerce Department not only provides content of commerce but also promotes the right kind of ethics, expertise and leadership suitable in all spheres of life so as to promote the essence of leadership through social responsibility. Commerce has been gaining a monumental place in the growing corporate world especially in the age of globalization. In fact, Commerce Education is very important part of Education which is called as Business Education. It is a living discipline and it is totally different from other disciplines. It is that area of Education which develops the required knowledge, attitude and skills for successful handing of trade, commerce and industry. Commerce education serves as a catalyst to Socio Economic Development of any Country or a region. It supplies the input that enables to meet the requirements of present day stiff competition business environment. It helps the youth in providing right course of action for their survival and growth. The Department of Commerce does not create students in its own image, but develops students who can create their own image. Our college has appreciably responded to this vibrant and paradigm shifts in the domain of Commerce and started the department of Commerce in the year 2012.i.e.the Course of B.com (computers) from the academic year 2012-13 with an intake of 60 students, gradually the strength of the students was increased. The Department has been extending its faculty services by sharing teaching work in the subject of Accounting & Finance Management, Organizational Behaviour & Personnel Management. So far, the Department has produced number of merit students who occupied, decent and higher posts in both in public & private sectors. Many of Our students were selected in various companies like, Maestria Paints MNC, Tech Mahindra. The department has internet facility. The members of the faculty practise and use the modern tools and further techniques like LCDs, practical demonstrations with the help of models, etc.

OBJECTIVES

The core objectives of the Department include to provide knowledge and skills in almost all areas of business to equip students to take up entry level jobs in different sectors of commerce, trade and industry. They also open up options for students in areas of business like Sales and Marketing, Accounts and Finance and Human Resource Development besides development of entrepreneurship among the students through participating interdisciplinary courses and teaching subjects like Human Values, Communication Skills, Analytical Skills, etc.

The department of commerce offers the following programmes in Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) mode since the academic year 2015-2016.

ACTIVITIES:

As part co-curricular and extracurricular activities the department organizes the activities like JAMs, debates, seminars, group discussions, quizzes, role plays, street plays, class room interactive activities and class counselling. The Department also conducts field trips, industrial tours and arranges special lectures by external experts in their respective fields for the benefit of students and the staff. The teaching faculty of the Department of Commerce have been actively accepting invited lectures at various colleges and participating in the community services in the local area. The Department has been sharing the social responsibilities such as imparting training for the benefit of the Women Self Help Groups (SHG) in the rural areas and the petty traders of the locality The faculty members of the Commerce Department encourage the students to involve actively in rendering social services to the community.

STRENGTHS, WEAKNESSES, OPPORTUNITIES, CHALLENGES AND FUTURE PLANS

The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, challenges and future plans of the department are:

Strengths:

The department is having well qualified and experienced faculty with research experience is the strength of the department. Reference books and Text books are available for the students and the faculty. The Commerce stream holds more prominence in the Job world. Hence, more students are attracted to commerce.

Weakness:

Curriculum of B. Com course is teaching intensive rather than research oriented though there is a Project Report and Viva voice. Very few opportunities are available for the Commerce students in the rural areas to get them exposed to the business practical knowledge.

Opportunities:

The department believes that research based education is a never ending process. The department of commerce visualizes various future opportunities for encouraging, motivating, progressing and developing post graduate students making them involved research activates. Further, it is believed that we need to hold on to our strengths to tide over our weaknesses and grab available opportunities.

Challenges:

The college is located in the backward rural area. The department is confronting mounting task in integrating skill development programmes with the academic programme. It is believed that our Commerce Department needs to be transformed into a smart department, exploiting the benefits of the digital technology.

Future Plans:

• Arranging a National level seminar in forthcoming year.
• Expansion of infrastructural facilities particularly exploitation of digital technology for teaching and learning.
• Starting MBA courses
• A Research Projects to be undertaken by the faculty.
